The Backstory
This blend has been in my head for a long time. As a Revolutionary War history buff, I've often wondered what coffee the colonists would have drank around 1776. Some recent books, and contact with their authors, has made it possible to research that very question. I spent some time reading and corresponding with these authors to get some insight into colonial coffee. The house ledgers of Jefferson and Washington turned out to hold most of the clues.
The answer is that they would have drank coffee from the Caribbean and Central / South America. Much of what was available to them is no longer "mainstream" or available to us, e.g., Haiti. Also, the literature is silenton processing of the cherry, but I have to imagine it was mainly natural (aka dry process), which is not exactly common in those origins any longer.
So I did the best I could this year and I'm fairly pleased with the result. I'm planning to offer this blend in July only, so get it while you can. I'm already planning for next year and may have a line on some more "authentic" inputs and methods, but this year's offering turned out pretty good, if I say so myself.
Oh, the name... the blend is named in honor of the Green Dragon Inn and Coffee House, founded in 1697 in Boston's financial district. It was likely the first commercial source of coffee in the colonies. I had another name in mind, too, but insufficient time to research it - maybe next year's blend will carry a different name.
